Casper vs. Cocoon Mattress: Overview

When it comes to the bed-in-a-box craze, Casper is one of the first and most well known to popularize this convenient purchase model. What started with the all-foam original Casper has grown into an impressive, redesigned line featuring five models for 2024 based on a decade of research, testing, development and real-world reviews.

But Casper is still the new(er) kid on the block compared to mattress mainstays like Sealy, which has stepped into the direct-to-consumer mattress market with the Cocoon Chill line that’s loved by both critics and customers alike and backed by more than 140 years of sleep quality and expertise.

Both companies offer highly-rated, competitively priced all-foam and hybrid mattress models that can be purchased online, compressed in an air-sealed bag for safe and easy transport, and shipped straight to you, making either a solid choice for anyone seeking a stress-free shopping experience and a sound night’s sleep.

Cocoon by Sealy vs. Casper: Construction

Both brands offer shoppers the choice between a body-contouring, supportive memory foam mattress or a hybrid design featuring the responsive feel of springs and foam. The all-foam Casper One and Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress models provide supportive, pressure-relieving sleep at an affordable price, while the Casper Dream and Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattresses are better suited for sleepers who prefer the more bouncy, responsive feel of traditional spring mattresses combined with the pressure-relieving perks of foam.

Materials

Both the Casper and Cocoon Chill mattresses by Sealy are made up of multiple layers of premium, CertiPUR-US® certified foam and covered in a cooling cover that promise a safe, relaxing sleep experience.

Casper

Cover: Soft knit with tiny perforations to promote a cozier, cooler feel.

Comfort Layer: Open cell, breathable polyurethane foam, known as Breathe Flex Foam, that enhances airflow to prevent overheating.

Transitional Layer: Align Memory Foam featuring pressure-relieving properties that contour to the natural curves of your body for a supportive, cradled feel.

Support Layer: The Casper One features an ultra-durable, extra-dense core of polyurethane foam to prevent sinking and sagging, while the Casper Dream Hybrid swaps out the foam for a layer of individually wrapped, responsive coils.

Cocoon Chill by Sealy

Cover: Premium, cool-to-touch cover infused with a proprietary “Phase Change Material” that absorbs and dissipates heat.

Comfort Layer: Perfect Fit memory foam adapts and responds to your body’s curves to relieve pressure points, promote airflow and improve overall support.

Transitional Layer: Cushioning memory foam absorbs movement and minimizes motion transfer so you can sleep peacefully.

Support Layer: The Cocoon Chill Memory Foam includes six inches of dense memory foam ideal for long-lasting durability, which is replaced by more than 900 fabric wrapped coils for extra support and increased airflow in the Chill Hybrid.

Size & Weight

Both the Casper and Cocoon mattresses are available in the standard mattress sizes, including Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King. Only Casper also offers the flexibility of ordering a Split King as well.

The Casper One has the slight height advantage at 11 inches thick and ranges from 47 to 100 pounds, while the Cocoon Chill Memory foam mattress comes in at 10 inches high and weighs around 48 to 91 pounds.

The hybrid models for both brands add an additional inch or two in height and are slightly heavier overall.

Firmness

Intentionally designed to meet the preferences of most sleepers, the Cocoon Chill delivers a classic, medium-firm feel that falls at around a six on the typical firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). The Chill Memory Foam mattress has the more traditional conforming, “sinking in” feel of an all-foam option, while the Chill Hybrid offers a more responsive, bouncy feel that’s closer to a traditional spring mattress.

The upgraded Casper One is the firmest mattress type in the entire collection, and noticeably firmer than its predecessor, the Casper. It has more of a true medium-firm feel.

Because both of these mattresses tend to skew on the firmer side, they’re better suited for back and stomach sleepers and even combination sleepers who need that extra support, while true side sleepers would probably prefer the ever-so-slightly softer feel of the hybrid models.

In addition to the popular One and Dream mattresses, Casper now offers three additional premium models that feature advanced cooling technology and/or extra layers for an ultra luxurious sleep experience.

Cocoon by Sealy vs. Casper One: Performance

While both of these mattress brands get rave reviews from real customers, understanding how they compare in key areas may help you narrow down your decision.

Support and Pressure Relief

Thanks to the multiple layers of premium foam, both the Casper and Sealy Cocoon Chill mattresses provide ideal pressure relief from common pain points by conforming and cradling your body’s unique shape.

Memory foam is known for its superior pressure relieving properties, and the Cocoon Chill is made with Perfect Fit memory foam—a high-quality, higher density foam—that cradles your body while you sleep and instantly adapts to your movements for an extra supportive sensation. Both Chill mattress models help promote proper spinal alignment while reducing pressure where you need it most.

The Casper One features a premium Align Memory Foam that actively conforms to the natural curve of your body and relieves pressure from problem areas like your back and hips. Side sleepers and those who want an added level of specialized support would prefer the Casper Dream hybrid mattress with responsive coils and zoned support that promotes ergonomic alignment.

Cooling

Both Casper and Cocoon mattresses are optimized for breathability to help regulate your temperature and promote a more comfortable sleep.

The Cocoon Chill mattresses may have a slight edge in this category thanks to their stretch-knit cover that’s infused with a proprietary Phase Change Material designed to absorb and dissipate heat, so you’ll stay cool and comfortable all night long. The individually wrapped coils of the Chill Hybrid model also helps to increase overall airflow and breathability. It’s worth mentioning that the Cocoon Chill has won numerous “best of” awards for its cooling capabilities.

The Casper One and Dream mattresses feature a perforated cover and open cell foam for enhanced airflow, but shoppers who are serious about cooling comfort should look into Casper’s Snow and Snow Max models for superior cooling technology.

Edge Support

Memory foam mattresses don’t typically excel in the edge support department, so you’ll want to opt for the Casper Dream or Cocoon Chill Hybrid model if this feature is particularly important to you.

Incorporating Sealy’s proprietary Quantum Edge Technology, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has a reinforced steel perimeter for improved edge support and better use of the whole bed surface. The Casper Dream hybrid mattress also offers better edge support for more sleeping area overall.

Motion Transfer

Isolating motion is one area where memory foam really shines, making both the Casper and Cocoon by Sealy ideal choices if you share your bed with a partner. The premium memory foam comfort layers of the all-foam models help reduce motion transfer and the individually wrapped coils of the hybrid models also work to isolate movement so you don’t have to worry about disturbing anyone.

Casper vs. Cocoon by Sealy: Price

Both Casper and Sealy are committed to providing top quality mattresses at competitive prices, but the Cocoon Chill by Sealy mattresses generally cost slightly less.

The all-foam models from both brands are the most affordable, with the Queen Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress coming in at $699 (originally $1,079) on CocoonbySealy.com, while at the time of this review, the Queen Casper One is on sale for $799 (originally $999) at Casper.com.*

The savings are even more pronounced between the hybrid models, with the Queen Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress listed at $899 (originally $1,389) compared to the Queen Casper Dream mattress at $1,495 (originally $1,875).*

At the time of this review, Sealy is also running a free gift with purchase of a Sealy Sleep Bundle that included sheets, pillows and a mattress protector, providing an even better value overall. Both retailers often offer sales and free extras, so keep an eye on their websites and sign up for emails to shop for the best prices.

Shipping and Delivery

The Cocoon by Sealy and Casper mattresses will arrive directly on your doorstep compressed in a box for quick and easy transport. The Cocoon mattresses ship free via UPS and should arrive within five to seven business days. Sealy does not currently deliver the Cocoon mattress line outside of the contiguous United States.

Casper also offers free shipping with UPS for all of their mattresses (additional shipping charges apply to Alaska and Hawaii), and you can expect them to be delivered within three to 11 business days. Casper offers a white glove in-home delivery and setup service for a $199 fee anywhere within the contiguous U.S.

Mattresses from both brands can take up to 48 hours to fully expand.

Warranty and Trial Period

Buying a mattress online without feeling it first can be risky, which is why both Casper and Sealy offer generous 100-night trial periods and free returns. They also both pick up the mattresses for return at no extra charge, ensuring you don’t feel stuck with a mattress that just doesn’t work for you.

They also share a similar 10-year limited warranty on all Casper and Cocoon mattresses, providing extra purchase confidence that either company will stand by their products.

Bottom Line

Casper helped put bed-in-a-box mattresses on the map, and they’ve only continued to innovate and improve, as evidenced by their most recently expanded line of memory foam and hybrid mattresses. On the other hand, Sealy has been making mattresses for more than 100 years, and that deep expertise has helped them make waves in the online mattress market with their award-winning and affordable Cocoon Chill Memory Foam and Hybrid mattresses.

Both manufacturers use premium, Certi-PUR certified foams and breathable construction to promote a safe, comfortable sleep environment. The Casper One is the firmest mattresses between the two brands, making it ideal for back and stomach sleepers, while the Cocoon Chill Hybrid offers the best of both supportive foam and responsive coil that appeals to almost any sleeper type—at only a slightly higher cost than the all-foam Casper One. Casper mattresses are more readily available in retail stores, but both manufacturers offer generous 100-day trials so you have plenty of time to put your new mattress to the test to decide which is best.

FAQs

Casper’s memory foam mattress, the One, is very similar to the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress by Sealy. The main differences are:

  • The Cocoon has proprietary cooling technology in the cover to better dissipate heat
  • The Casper One is slightly thicker than the Cocoon (11 inches versus 10).
  • The Cocoon is a just little softer feeling than the Casper One, though both are rated as medium-firm mattresses.
  • The Casper One mattress is available both online and in national retail stores, while the Cocoon by Sealy is sold mainly through the manufacturer’s website with select models available at Costco.

The all-foam mattresses may be a little too firm for true side sleepers, although the slightly softer Cocoon memory foam would probably be the preferred choice over the Casper One. Side sleepers should seriously consider choosing the more responsive support of the hybrid models, with the Casper Dream hybrid mattress offering extra zoned ergonomic support, which is ideal for keeping your hips, shoulders and spine aligned.

People who suffer from back pain would be better served with the supportive, firmer feel of the all-foam Casper One or Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress.
