How We Chose The Best Sectional Sofas

Whether you’re looking to maximize the seating in your living room or you want to create a cozier configuration in your basement, a sectional can be a great investment. A large, multi-piece sofa consisting of separate sections that join together to form one unified seating arrangement, a sectional seamlessly blends form and function, elevating the aesthetics of your room while also creating more seating options.

The best sectionals can:

• Optimize your room: L-shaped and U-shaped sectionals fill otherwise empty corner spaces with additional seating, making the most of your space.
• Enhance comfort: Many sectionals are built for comfort with deep seats and extended chaise lounges ideal for stretching out and lounging.
• Create clear division: A sectional can add structure to a large, open concept area by creating a clear boundary line, dividing one space from another.
• Adapt to changing needs: Modular sectionals are comprised of individual pieces that can be rearranged to fit various room shapes and sizes.
• Add convenience: Many modern sectionals come with cup holders, built-in storage options, charging ports, sleeper pullouts and/or reclining seats.

But to reap all the potential benefits of a sectional, it’s critical that you select the right one. Our experts spent countless hours identifying the most important considerations when choosing a sectional, then evaluated all the available brands and models to determine which come out on top—so you can make your choice with confidence and ease.

What We Looked For

Here’s an overview of the criteria we used when compiling our list of the best sectionals (and you should, too):

High Quality Materials & Durable Construction

The best sectionals are built to last. They feature premium materials and sturdy construction designed to withstand frequent and prolonged use. They are upholstered in resilient, stain-resistant textiles like performance fabrics or wipeable genuine leather, making them easy to maintain and clean. Their cushions consist of highly resilient materials like high-density foams, and they include sinuous springs or webbed support under the cushions to prevent sagging. Their frames consist of highly durable materials like solid wood or kiln-dried hardwood, which are strong and stable enough to support heavy usage. If the sectional is modular, the individual units include secure clips or a solid bracket system that lock them together and prevent them from slipping or sliding apart.

Versatile & Adaptable

The best sectionals are available in a variety of configurations and orientations, making them suited to various room sizes and layouts, and able to evolve with you. Common sectional configurations include L-shaped, U-shaped and chaise:

• L-shaped: Typically made of two connected seating sections that meet at a right angle to form an “L” shape.
• U-shaped: Consists of a center sofa and an equal number of seats on either side of the center sofa.
• Chaise: Typically consists of a regular sofa with three seats and an attached chaise on the left or right side.

If you think you’ll want to change the configuration of your sectional at any point, you’d be wise to choose a modular one. Modular sectionals are made from separate pieces (modules) that you can rearrange or add/remove for a fully customizable and adaptable layout. Modular sectionals make it possible to alter the orientation—which side the longer arm or chaise is on when you stand facing the sofa—whenever you choose.

Extremely Comfortable

It goes without saying that the best sectionals prioritize comfort. They use fabrics that are soft to the touch and cushions and pillows that strike the optimal balance of comfort and support. They are ergonomically sound and have plenty of surface area for stretching out and lounging.

Reasonably Priced

While the price range for sectionals is a vast one, with the cost depending largely on the size, materials and features, the best options are competitively priced and offer good value for the money. They are comprised of quality materials and are designed for longevity. They are aesthetically pleasing while also delivering superior comfort, and they include functional features without the unnecessary frills.

Comprehensive Warranty & Generous Return Policy

The top sectional brands offer warranties, which protect you in the event of product defects. They cover a significant length of time, and are comprehensive in their coverage. They also have reasonable return policies, which ensure you have plenty of time to try out your furniture before deciding if it’s a fit.

Positive Customer Reviews

Few things are as helpful when shopping for any product as reviews from real customers who can speak to the quality and performance. The best sectionals have amassed countless positive reviews on credible third party sites from actual buyers who praise their comfort, style, ease of maintenance and durability without incentive. The companies themselves are highly rated by organizations like the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
